Introduction
This is one of the most common questions we are asked at Harley Mind Care. It is also one of the most honest questions — because a private ADHD assessment represents a real financial commitment, and people deserve a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
So here it is, honestly.
What is the alternative?
The NHS pathway for ADHD assessment starts with a GP referral, which is then triaged by a local service — either an adult mental health team, a specialist ADHD clinic, or for children, CAMHS. Once referred, you join a waiting list.
NHS waiting times for ADHD assessment vary significantly by region. In 2024, ADHD UK reported that adult waiting times range from 12 weeks to over 10 years, and children’s waiting times range from 5 weeks to over 10 years. In many parts of London and the South East, adults are waiting five to seven years.
For some people, waiting is the right choice — particularly if symptoms are manageable, if you are not in crisis, and if you are content to wait. For others, the cost of waiting is higher than the cost of assessment.
When private assessment is clearly worth it
In our clinical experience, private assessment tends to make the clearest positive difference in the following situations:
Your child is struggling at school right now. Every year without a diagnosis is a year without appropriate support, adjustments, or an EHCP. The educational cost compounds.
Your symptoms are affecting your work, relationships, or mental health significantly. ADHD that is untreated can contribute to anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and job instability. Earlier diagnosis means earlier access to treatment that can change these trajectories.
You are a student needing DSA support or exam access arrangements. These require a formal diagnosis from a qualified clinician. You cannot access them while you are on a waiting list.
You have been waiting for more than two years with no clear end in sight. At some point the wait itself becomes the problem.
The honest case against
Private assessment has real costs. Adult assessments typically start from £800 to £1,200 at a reputable clinic. For families with children needing combined ADHD and autism assessments, costs can reach £3,000 to £4,000.
Some GP practices decline Shared Care Agreements, meaning ongoing medication prescribing remains private — adding £80 to £180 per month in ongoing costs. This is not universal but it does happen.
Some insurance products may ask about mental health diagnoses at renewal, though ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition rather than a mental illness and its impact on policies varies considerably.
What the evidence shows
A 2022 study in The Lancet Psychiatry found that adults diagnosed and treated for ADHD showed significant improvements in quality of life, occupational functioning, and mental health outcomes. The most consistent predictor of good outcomes was earlier diagnosis and earlier access to appropriate treatment.
We see this in clinic every week. Adults who received a diagnosis in their forties and fifties consistently describe the experience as clarifying — understanding why certain things were harder, and finally having access to support that helps.
Our honest answer
For most people who have been waiting more than two years, whose symptoms are affecting their daily functioning, or whose children are struggling in school right now — yes, private assessment is worth it. Not because it is easy to spend the money, but because the cost of not acting is also real.
If you are unsure, call us before you book. We are always happy to talk through whether assessment is right for your specific situation.
