Introduction
Not knowing what to expect from an ADHD assessment is one of the most common reasons people delay booking one. This post explains exactly what the process involves at Harley Mind Care, step by step — so that you can walk into your assessment with confidence rather than anxiety.
Before your appointment — pre-assessment questionnaires
Once you have booked your assessment, you will be sent pre-assessment questionnaires to complete before your appointment. For adults, these include validated ADHD rating scales covering attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive function, alongside questions about your developmental history, medical history, and current functioning. You will also be asked to invite a close friend, partner, or family member to complete a brief informant questionnaire. This third-party perspective is clinically important — it helps your consultant understand how your symptoms present to others, not just how you experience them yourself.
For children, the pre-assessment questionnaires include the Conners 4 rating scales, completed separately by parents and by teachers. Because ADHD can present differently at home and school, independent perspectives from both settings are essential. It is important to ask the school to complete their section as soon as possible after booking, as this is required before the assessment can proceed.
Your assessment appointment
The assessment appointment itself typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. At Harley Mind Care, this is always conducted by a consultant psychiatrist or consultant paediatrician — a doctor with a minimum of 13 years of specialist training.
During the appointment your clinician will conduct a structured clinical interview covering your current symptoms and how they affect your daily life, your developmental history including childhood behaviour, school experience, and early difficulties, your medical, psychiatric, and family history, and any other conditions or explanations that might account for your symptoms. This last point is important — a thorough assessment does not simply confirm ADHD, it considers and rules out anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, autism, and other conditions that can present with similar symptoms.
The appointment is a conversation, not an examination. There is no pass or fail. The clinician’s job is to understand your experience thoroughly so they can make an accurate clinical judgement.
After your appointment — your report
Following your assessment, your consultant will write a full diagnostic report. This is usually provided within two weeks of your appointment. The report sets out the clinical findings, the diagnosis (or absence of diagnosis, with explanation), the assessment tools used, differential diagnoses considered, and specific recommendations for treatment and support.
The report is a clinical document that you own. It can be shared with your GP, employer, university, school, local authority, DVLA, insurance company, or any other body that requires it. At Harley Mind Care, reports are written to be understood by non-clinical readers as well as clinicians.
If ADHD is diagnosed — what happens next?
If your consultant diagnoses ADHD and recommends medication, your first prescription is included in the assessment fee at no additional cost. Your consultant will discuss the medication options, the titration process, and what to expect.
We will then write to your GP to establish a Shared Care Agreement — this is the arrangement where your GP takes over prescribing ADHD medication on behalf of your consultant, significantly reducing your ongoing costs. Most GPs accept shared care. If yours declines, we can continue prescribing privately and can provide additional documentation to support a reconsideration.
If ADHD is not diagnosed
A negative finding is still a finding. If the assessment does not support an ADHD diagnosis, your report will explain what the clinician found, what alternative explanations were considered, and what recommendations they have for your next steps. Many patients report that even a negative diagnosis provides important clarity — understanding what is not driving their difficulties helps them seek the right support.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes — particularly for in-person assessments. Having a trusted person with you can be helpful, especially if you find it difficult to describe your experiences under pressure. For online assessments, a family member or partner can be present in the same room.
