Dr Anja Malmendier- Mühlschlegel – MD
Dr Anja Malmendier-Mühlschlegel is a highly experienced medical specialist in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and psychotherapy with over 20 years of specialist expertise across the UK and Europe. She is dually trained in Germany and the UK and holds full GMC specialist registration, alongside German Facharzt accreditation in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
Her clinical work spans outpatient, inpatient, neurodevelopmental and eating-disorder settings, and she has held significant leadership, academic and service-development roles throughout her career. She is known for her compassionate, evidence-based approach and her extensive expertise in complex presentations involving ASD, ADHD, eating disorders, mood disorders, emotional dysregulation and trauma.
Professional Experience
She currently works as a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in the All-Ages Eating Disorder Service (Kent & Medway) and continues to undertake ASD assessments with NELFT. She also teaches on postgraduate programmes at the University of Luxembourg and is Academic Lead for Higher Training (KSS).
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Anja is the Academic Lead for Higher Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS), where she oversees the development and supervision of advanced psychiatric trainees. She also works as a Bank Consultant for NELFT, focusing on ASD assessments, and holds practising privileges at the Priory Wellbeing Centre, Canterbury.
Earlier in her career, Dr Anja spent several years as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Luxembourg, leading inpatient services for young people at risk of harm and developing specialist pathways for eating disorders, DBT and secure-care liaison. Before this, she held multiple Consultant positions across Kent, including roles in eating disorders, early intervention for psychosis, neurodevelopmental services and DBT service leadership.
Her career reflects a strong commitment to high-quality care, service development and training the next generation of child and adolescent psychiatrists. She brings deep expertise across neurodevelopmental disorders, eating disorders, emotional dysregulation and complex adolescent mental health.
