Not sure which therapy is right for you?

It’s normal to feel unsure. Different therapies suit different concerns, and picking the right one can feel like a puzzle. Below are some questions we hear often — and the therapies that might fit each situation. If you’re not sure after reading, please contact our admin team. We’re happy to talk through what’s going on and help you choose.

Is a difficult experience or memory affecting how you live now?

You might be dealing with post-traumatic stress, distressing memories, or the after-effects of a difficult event — whether recent or long ago. Two of our evidence-based trauma therapies could help: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT).

Are anxious thoughts, low mood, or overwhelming feelings getting in your way?

For anxiety, depression, panic, OCD, phobias, or persistent worry, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has one of the strongest evidence bases available. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a related approach that focuses on accepting difficult feelings and moving towards what matters to you.

Do you struggle with self-criticism, shame, or being hard on yourself?

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) was developed specifically for people who find it difficult to be kind to themselves. It helps ease persistent shame and self-criticism, and works well for people who have tried other therapies without lasting change.

Are relationships in your family or partnership feeling difficult?

Family Therapy works with the whole family system rather than focusing on one person as 'the problem'. Couples Therapy helps partners in all types of relationships work through communication difficulties, disconnection, life transitions, or considering separation.

Do you want to make sense of your own story and patterns?

Narrative Therapy helps you separate yourself from difficulties and re-author the stories you tell about yourself. Systemic Individual Psychotherapy works with you as an individual while looking at the wider relationships and systems that shape your experience.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma is one of the areas we specialise in. We offer two evidence-based trauma therapies, and our clinicians work together to match each client with the right approach — sometimes starting with one and combining with the other as needed.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR uses guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to help the brain process difficult memories. It doesn't require you to describe what happened in detail. Recommended by NICE and the World Health Organization for PTSD. Available for adults, children and young people.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is a structured, phase-based adaptation of CBT designed specifically for trauma. It combines skills-building with careful memory processing, with parents actively involved in children's treatment. One of the most evidence-based trauma therapies for children and young people.

Anxiety, mood and self-understanding

For anxiety, depression, worry, self-criticism, or wanting to work on how you relate to your own mind, we offer a range of evidence-based individual therapies. Different approaches suit different people and different presentations — your first appointment will help you find the right fit.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

The most widely researched form of psychological therapy in the world. CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours — helping you understand and change the patterns that keep difficulties going. NICE-recommended for anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, phobias, and more. Available for adults, children and young people.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

Developed by Professor Paul Gilbert, CFT helps people who find it hard to be kind to themselves — those who experience persistent shame, self-criticism, or feel unable to soothe themselves during difficult times. Particularly helpful when other therapies haven't led to lasting change. Available for adults, children and young people.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a mindfulness-based development of CBT. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult feelings, ACT helps you accept them and take action towards what matters to you. Helpful for anxiety, depression, chronic health conditions, workplace stress, and adjustment to difficult life circumstances. Available for adults, children and young people.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy helps you separate yourself from the difficulties you're facing and re-author the stories you tell about yourself. It's a respectful, curiosity-driven approach that works well when you want to explore your identity, values, and how you make sense of your experiences. Available for adults, children and young people.

Relationships and family

When difficulties involve more than one person, working with the relationship or the family as a whole is often more effective than individual therapy alone. Our systemic clinicians help families, couples and individuals work through relational patterns with respect and skill.

Family Therapy

Family therapy works with the whole family as a system, rather than focusing on one person as 'the problem'. Helpful for families with children or teenagers who are struggling, adult family dynamics, blended families, separation and divorce, or any situation where the difficulty involves more than one person.

Couples Therapy

For couples of all kinds — married and unmarried, LGBTQ+ and heterosexual, long-established and new, together and separating. Helps with communication, disconnection, life transitions, affairs, parenting decisions, and considering the future of the relationship.

Working systemically on yourself

Sometimes the wider context matters even when you’re working alone. Systemic individual therapy takes a relational view of individual difficulties — looking not just inside you, but at the patterns, relationships and family systems that have shaped how you got here.

Systemic Individual Psychotherapy

Individual therapy delivered by a systemic psychotherapist. Uses systemic ideas — reflecting practice, circular questioning, respectful curiosity — to help you understand yourself in the context of your relationships and history. Particularly helpful for people working on family patterns, cultural identity, and long-standing relational themes.

FAQs

FAQs

  • Yes. Therapy is a collaborative process, and if you and your therapist think another approach would suit you better, we can help you switch — either with the same therapist (if they're trained in the alternative) or by moving to a colleague. There's no pressure to stick with something that isn't working.

  • No. You can book directly with us as a self-pay client, or through your health insurance if you have cover. Insurance-referred clients typically go through their insurer's authorisation process first.

  • Both. All our therapies are available virtually and in person at 10 Harley Street. Virtual sessions use secure video and are effective for most therapies — including EMDR, family therapy and couples therapy. Many clients start in-person and move to virtual once the therapeutic relationship is established. Some do the opposite.

  • Yes. Many of our therapies are available for children and adolescents — with adaptations for age and developmental stage. Some, like TF-CBT and Family Therapy, are particularly well-suited to CYP work. Fees for children and young people are the same as for adults.

  • Harley Mind Care is CQC-registered, ISO 27001 certified for information security, and Cyber Essentials certified. Everything you share is confidential. We only share information with your consent, or in the rare situations where UK law or safeguarding responsibilities require it — which your therapist will discuss with you at the start.

  • Different therapies suit different concerns and different people. CBT is highly structured and skills-focused. Systemic therapy looks at relationships and context. EMDR and TF-CBT are trauma-specialist. CFT focuses on self-compassion. ACT is mindfulness-based. Narrative Therapy helps re-author personal stories. Your first appointment is designed to explore what fits — and it's completely fine to switch approaches later if needed.
