Dr Ismail Khan — Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist | Specialist in ADHD and Autism
Dr Ismail Khan is a UK-trained Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist on the GMC Specialist Register for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (since 4 February 2025), specialising in the assessment and management of ADHD, Autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. He holds full GMC registration with a licence to practise (GMC: 7570592), is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych), and is both Section 12 and Approved Clinician approved under the Mental Health Act.
He currently works full-time as a Consultant Psychiatrist in a specialist neurodevelopmental role with Psychiatry-UK, a private provider working in close partnership with the NHS under Right to Choose. His core specialty is Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and within his neurodevelopmental practice he assesses adolescents aged 17 and over, young adults, and adults across the age range for ADHD and Autism — areas where his CAMHS training transfers directly. Assessments are formulation-based, drawing on detailed early developmental, personal and family history, systemic context, past medical and psychiatric history, risk assessment, and screening for comorbid conditions. He works carefully to exclude alternative explanations, places strong emphasis on collateral information, and aligns formulations closely with DSM diagnostic criteria. Autism assessments are conducted jointly with a specialist nurse or other MDT colleague.
Prior to his current role, Dr Khan worked as a Locum Consultant CAMHS Psychiatrist with Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Trust (February to September 2025), leading a community CAMHS multidisciplinary team and providing supervision to junior doctors. He completed UK Higher Specialty Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry between February 2022 and February 2025, with placements covering a Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Tic Disorders clinic at Queens Medical Centre Nottingham, community CAMHS in Derby, the Children Looked After service in Nottingham, CAMHS Learning Disabilities at Brooklands Hospital Birmingham, and community CAMHS in Cannock. He also took on an acting-up Consultant role within CAMHS in Telford from November 2024 to February 2025, leading the MDT, running outpatient clinics, and supervising middle-grade and specialty doctors.
His Core Psychiatry Training (2018–2022) on the Black Country Scheme provided broad foundations across General Adult, Older Adult, CAMHS, Learning Disabilities, Psychiatric Intensive Care and Assertive Outreach. Earlier in his career he held a Trust Grade SHO post in Paediatrics at the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust and a Clinical Teaching Assistant post at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences in Riyadh. He has presented at the RCPsych Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Annual Conference (2023) on the use of exposure-based virtual reality for anxiety in young people, and at the RCPsych International Congress (2021) on a Quality Improvement Project assessing adherence to DVLA fitness-to-drive guidance.
Dr Khan takes a holistic, family-centred approach, working in partnership with patients, families and multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver evidence-based, culturally sensitive psychiatric care.
