Dr Mahmoud Barakat — Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist | Sleep Medicine Specialist
Dr Mahmoud Barakat is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with experience in NHS and independent sector practice. He works with children, young people and families presenting with neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and autism, alongside associated emotional, behavioural and sleep difficulties. He has a specialist interest in the interface between neurodevelopmental conditions, mental health and sleep, and holds European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) Somnologist certification.
He has worked in Consultant roles in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry within NHS CAMHS services. His Higher Specialty Training was completed across Manchester Foundation Trust (including the Winnicott Centre and Galaxy House adolescent inpatient unit) and East Lancashire CAMHS. His Core Psychiatry training was undertaken across multiple NHS Trusts, providing broad experience across the lifespan prior to specialising in CAMHS.
His clinical practice focuses on neurodevelopmental assessment and management, particularly ADHD and autism, alongside associated emotional and behavioural difficulties. He has a particular interest in sleep difficulties in children and young people, especially where these interact with neurodevelopmental and mental health presentations. He incorporates evidence-based approaches to sleep assessment and management within a broader biopsychosocial framework, and has contributed to academic and conference work in this area.
Dr Barakat works collaboratively with children, young people and their families using a formulation-led approach, integrating developmental history, family context, school information and clinical assessment to develop clear and practical management plans. Alongside clinical work, he contributes to teaching, training and service development within child and adolescent mental health.
