Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

If you or your child are struggling with anxiety, low mood, or overwhelming thoughts, the last thing you need is another appointment that feels rushed or clinical. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy — CBT — is one of the most researched and effective talking therapies available, and we deliver it with the warmth and care you’d hope for. Our therapists work with you or your child to understand what’s happening, why it feels the way it does, and what practical steps can help. It’s a proven approach, delivered by a team that takes the time to make it feel human.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

CBT is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy that focuses on how thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours are connected. Small changes in one area can create real change in another. Rather than exploring the past in depth, CBT works in the here and now — helping you notice the patterns that keep difficulties going, and building practical skills you can use throughout life.

It’s recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a first-line treatment for many common mental health difficulties, and it’s the most widely studied form of psychological therapy in the world. What makes it work is not just the evidence base — it’s the collaborative relationship between you and your therapist, and the sense of gradually taking back control.

What CBT can help with

CBT is used to support people experiencing:

If you’re not sure whether CBT is the right approach for what you’re facing, that’s completely normal. Your first appointment is designed to explore this together, and if a different therapy would suit you better we’ll help you find the right pathway.

CBT for adults

Our adult CBT service is designed for people who want practical, structured support — whether you’ve tried therapy before or this is your first step. Sessions are typically weekly or fortnightly and follow a course of treatment agreed with your therapist at the start. Many people begin to feel benefit within a few sessions, though the total number needed varies with what you’re working on.

Between sessions, you’ll often have small tasks to try — things like noticing thoughts, keeping a mood diary, or trying a new response to a difficult situation. This is where much of the change happens, and your therapist will make sure the tasks feel manageable rather than overwhelming.

CBT for children and young people

CBT works well for children and adolescents because it’s practical, structured and helps young people build a sense of control. Our therapists are experienced in working with school-age children, teenagers, and their families — adapting the approach to be developmentally appropriate at every age.

For younger children, sessions often include play, drawing and games alongside the talking. For teenagers, sessions look more like adult CBT but with room to explore identity, friendships, school pressures and family life. Parents and carers are involved where helpful, and always with the young person’s understanding of how and why.

We work regularly with children and young people who are neurodivergent — including those with autism and ADHD — and adapt CBT approaches accordingly.

What happens in a session

1

Your first appointment (90 minutes)

The first appointment is longer than the sessions that follow. It gives your therapist time to understand what's brought you to therapy, what you'd like to work on, and what has happened before. You won't be pressured to share more than you're ready to. By the end of the appointment, you'll have a clearer sense of what CBT would look like for you, and you can decide together whether to continue.

2

Ongoing sessions (50 minutes)

Follow-up sessions are 50 minutes and typically happen weekly or fortnightly. Each session has a shared focus, and your therapist will check in on how the week has gone, review any between-session work, and introduce new ideas or skills as you go. Sessions feel collaborative — you're not being lectured or diagnosed, you're working alongside your therapist to make sense of things and try things out.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies. For focused difficulties like a specific phobia or short-term anxiety, six to eight sessions may be enough. For more complex or long-standing patterns, twelve to twenty sessions are more common. Your therapist will discuss expected length with you at the start, review progress along the way, and adjust the plan if needed.

CBT is designed to help you develop skills you can use for the rest of your life, so ending well matters. As you approach the final sessions, your therapist will help you consolidate what you’ve learned and prepare a plan for staying well.

How we deliver CBT

You can see one of our CBT therapists virtually (via secure video) or in person at 10 Harley Street, London. Both work equally well — many clients prefer virtual for its convenience and flexibility, while others prefer being face-to-face in a private consulting room. You can switch between formats during your course of therapy if your needs change.

CBT FAQ

  • For many common mental health difficulties, CBT has one of the strongest evidence bases of any therapy. But not everyone responds to it, and some difficulties benefit from a different approach. Your first appointment is designed to explore whether CBT is the best fit — and if it isn't, we'll help you find the right pathway.
  • Yes. CBT works well alongside medication, and many people benefit from combining the two. If you're prescribed medication by another clinician (including your GP or another team at Harley Mind Care), your therapist will work with you and, where appropriate, liaise with your prescriber.
  • No. You can book directly with us as a self-pay client, or through your health insurance if you have cover. Insurance-referred clients typically go through their insurer's authorisation process first.
  • Only with your consent, and only when it would help your child's care. Many parents find it useful for us to liaise with the school SENCo or class teacher, particularly for children with anxiety, attendance difficulties or additional needs. We agree this together at the start.
  • We ask for at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with less notice are charged at the full rate, as the clinician's time has been reserved for you and can't usually be filled at short notice.
  • Harley Mind Care is CQC-registered, ISO 27001 certified for information security, and Cyber Essentials certified. Everything you share is confidential. We only share information with your consent, or in the rare situations where UK law or safeguarding responsibilities require it — which your therapist will discuss with you at the start.
